MALTA INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS FESTIVAL

Fireworks are a yearlong pastime in Malta, and a major part of local festi – village festivals that celebrate their respective patron saints. Taking place all the year round but particularly so in summer, these festi are always lively and colourful. The colour, of course, is best provided by the fireworks that impeccably light the Maltese skies.

2018 sees the 17th edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival, organised by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority. In particular, it will be taking place on Saturday 21st, Friday 27th and Monday 30th of April 2018. Year after year, the festival a guaranteed time of excitement for locals, tourists, as well as the fireworks factories around the island that get the chance to show off their skills with more gusto than ever. International pyrotechnic companies also make their way to Maltese shores to participate. Previous editions of the festival have seen entries from countries all the way between Australia and Italy.

22.04.2018 11.00hrs – 11.40hrs – IN GUARDIA PARADE 

IN GUARDIA PARADE

The IN GUARDIA PARADE is a re-enactment that portrays an authentic event that took place regularly inside Malta’s major fortifications of the Order of St. John. The re-enactment portrays the inspection of the fort and its garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John in charge of military affairs. During the re-enactment, of the fort’s garrison – some 50 re-enactors in all, kitted-out in their uniforms perform their military drill to demonstrate to the Grand Bailiff its state of readiness. The show begins at 11.00hrs and lasts 40 minutes. In case of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstance the event may be cancelled without prior notice. When in doubt it is best to contact one of the Tourist Information Offices.

 

 

24.04.2018 12.00hrs  –  A FLIGHT THROUGH TIME 

A FLIGHT THROUGH TIME

International and extraordinary pianist Julia Miller will be performing a delightful and inspiring programme of piano music at the Monastery of St. Augustine in Old Bakery Street, Valletta on Tuesday the 24th April 2018 at noon.

The programme is a flight through time from Bach to Hengelvald. The programme will highlight the works of J.S.Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Hengelvald, spanning from the Baroque to the 20th century.  Ms. Miller will be performing J.S.Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV97, W.A. Mozart’s Sonata in A Major no.3314; J.Brahms’ Intermezzo in A major and Hengevald’s Prelude from Partita Rhytmique.

A visit to the interesting chambers of the monastery which are adorned with beautiful and historical sacred ornaments, is being offered after the concert for free. Proceeds from the event will go to the restoration project of the Augustinian Monastery. Tickets, costing 8 euro, can be obtained from the venue itself half an hour before the concert begins. 27.04.18  – 10.30 – 11.30  –  CHANGING OF THE GUARDS 

CHANGING OF THE GUARDS

The Changing of the Guard Ceremony is held every last Friday of the month at St George’s Square, Valletta. The parade commences at 10.30 hrs, with the AFM Band marching down Republic Street onto St George’s Square Valletta. Here, the new guard marches out from the Main Guard in order to replace the old guard which marches out from The Palace Valletta. Following the exchange of ‘duties’ the AFM Band conducts a marching display in the same square.

The Ħad-Dingli Local Council will be organising ‘Ħad-Dingli Ħidma Agrarja u Tradizzjonijiet’ on Sunday, 29th April 2018.

This local council constantly encourages the promotion of the Maltese Islands’ local traditional aspects, in particular that of Ħad-Dingli.

An event such as this showcases what the village has to offer in terms of culture, agriculture, gastronomy, tradition and the ecology.

Visitors benefit from a unique agricultural experience, where they observe and take part in traditional agricultural practices, which unfortunately, are being phased-out due to various technological developments.

There will be several shows and attractions throughout the event.
